The Calm Home Edit: Everyday Items That Make Life Feel Less Chaotic

This post contains affiliate links. I only share items I use, love, or would happily bring into my own home.

Life can feel loud and chaotic, especially with everything that’s happening in the world on top of overflowing schedules, endless notifications and clutter that literally sneaks up overnight. (Seriously!) To me, creating a calming environment isn’t about perfection or minimalism taken to extremes. It’s about surrounding yourself with a few key comforting items that quietly support your day, bring a smile to your face or provide a subtle sense of serenity.

These are my Calm Home Essentials
Here are some of my favorite everyday items I rely on to bring peace, order and ease into our home. Nothing overly fancy. Just some simple pieces that make life feel a little lighter, and of course, it wouldn’t be Gather & Glow if they didn’t make your space a little prettier!

1. Catch-All Containers (Because Things Need a Home)

The fastest way chaos shows up is when small things don’t have a place. A simple tray or basket instantly creates visual calm. I live this every day. From kids’ toys and trinkets to piles of mail to lost remotes, trying to keep everything in its designated spot is beyond challenging. Having some containers to hold all of this stuff does help.

Use them for:

  • Entryway keys + sunglasses

  • Kitchen counter essentials

  • Living room remote control, books and magazines

Some of my fave items:

Books and coffee cups end up here. :)

Use pretty cutting or serving boards to anchor frequently used items.

I like to anchor key kitchen items across a large countertop. Place frequently used items, like salt and pepper shakers, sugar jars and spoon rests, on a pretty tray or cutting board so that you always know where to find them.

2. Soft Lighting

Overhead lighting is functional, but to me, it is beyond overpowering at home. Warm, layered light changes everything and calms me and my family down, especially when we are getting ready for bedtime.

Why it matters:

  • Creates a slower evening rhythm

  • Makes rooms feel more inviting

  • Reduces visual stress

Soft lighting is calming. Use flameless candles for less hassle, especially if you have kids

Flameless candles are a must in a house with kids. I love how these flicker just like the real ones.

Use small lamps instead of overhead lighting for a calming vibe

3. Cozy Textiles That Invite You to Exhale

Whether I’m working or winding down, I almost always have a cozy blanket nearby. We keep throws in nearly every room, especially in the winter months, because there’s something so grounding about being able to wrap yourself in a little extra warmth whenever you need it.

Keep cozy blankets and pillows handy

These colors just calm me down. The ruffled throw and pillows are all from Target.

Think:

  • Throws within reach

  • Linen or cotton pillow covers

  • Lightweight blankets for every room

And if you have more pillows and blankets than you know what to do with, store them in poufs like these for easy access.

4. Glass Storage (See-Through = Peace of Mind)

There’s something truly calming about knowing exactly what you have — and where it belongs. Staying organized puts me at ease, especially when it looks beautiful too. I love a clear container, and luckily there are so many styles, shapes, and sizes to suit every room in the house.

Use glass jars for:

  • Pantry staples

  • Bathroom cotton balls/swabs

  • Laundry room supplies

5. Paper + Pen Still Matter

Digital life can feel overwhelming. Writing slows things down. It might sound simple — or even a little hokey — but spending all day on my phone and computer can be draining. My New Year’s resolution was to journal more: noting what I’m thankful for each day, and capturing the little funny or sweet things my kids say and do. It keeps me grounded, helps me pause, and reminds me what truly matters in the grand scheme of things.

Pause. Pick up a pen. Write what warms your heart.

Remind yourself of all the good things with a pretty journal

My new journal from my sweet niece! It’s is so beautiful and those two pups on the cover make me smile!

Closing Calming Thoughts

A calm home is everything in life’s ups and downs — hope these simple ideas bring a little peace and joy to your day!
