Deck the Halls, Husker Style: A Nebraska Football-Themed Christmas Tree for the Win

Fall in Nebraska means two things: football season and the holidays are right around the corner! This year feels extra special for our family — we just dropped off our second oldest at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to kick off his college journey! 🥹 With Husker pride running deeper than ever, I couldn’t resist sharing a few pics of our over-the-top Cornhusker tree from last year. Think red, white, black and all-out fan spirit.

Start with a Team Color Base
Every great college football tree begins with a bold color palette. For us, that meant plenty of red, white and black. We strung up red and white lights, mixed in Husker ornaments and classic bulbs in team colors, and wrapped it all with red-and-white garland. Pro tip: we were a little late getting our tree up, which worked out in our favor — my husband scored a huge stash of Husker ornaments at half price from the local Husker store. Touchdown!

Football Finds for the Win
Amazon came through with football ribbon and themed picks that pulled everything together. For the topper? A glorious combo of a giant cornhead and flags. The finishing touch was a tree skirt that looked like a football field, complete with yard lines. Talk about festive game-day energy!

Personalize with Traditions
As the years go on, we’ll keep adding to this Husker masterpiece — family photos from campus visits, ticket stubs, and little memories that make it uniquely ours.

Game Day Meets Holiday Cheer
The best part of this tree is how it turns game day into a holiday all its own. Picture friends and family gathered around, the glow of red and white lights filling the room, nachos and wings on the table and kickoff on TV. It’s tailgating meets Christmas morning — and I’m here for it.

No judgment if you’re not a Husker fan. I’m already tempted to make a Creighton Bluejay tree… or maybe even a Bennington Badger one for our littles. Whatever team you cheer for, there’s a tree waiting to be decorated in your colors. Because if you ask me, sports + Christmas = pure joy.
